Engaging patients and caregivers in Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) is crucial for developing healthcare solutions that truly address patient needs.

A survey by ISPOR highlighted that while 79.6% of respondents believe focusing on outcomes important to patients is essential, only 45.6% consider involving patients as research partners as a primary attribute of patient-centered research.

This gap underscores the need for more comprehensive integration of patients and caregivers into the research process. By actively involving them, researchers can ensure that studies reflect real-world experiences and preferences, leading to more effective and accepted healthcare interventions.

However, equally important is educating patients and caregivers about HEOR. Understanding the principles and methodologies of HEOR empowers them to contribute meaningfully to research discussions and decision-making processes. Educational initiatives, such as the European Haemophilia Consortium (EHC) Health Economics Course run by experts from Prime HCD, are designed to bridge this knowledge gap. This online course comprises modules including:

  1. Introduction to Health Economics
  2. Health Technology Assessments (HTA) – Understanding Outcomes
  3. HTA in Bleeding Disorders – Applied Cost Effectiveness Analysis and Budgetary Impact
  4. Payment Models

These modules cover topics such as the nature of health decision-making, measuring health outcomes, health economic modelling and differing payment models. By participating in such courses, patients and caregivers can enhance their understanding of HEOR, enabling them to engage more effectively in research activities.

If we integrate ‘HEOR educated’ patients and caregivers into HEOR research, surely this will achieve more than just enhancing study relevance. Research outcomes will become even more aligned with patient needs, and patient needs more aligned with the complexities of real-life healthcare challenges.

We believe the collaborative approach bridging education with engagement fosters further trust between patients, caregivers, researchers and decision-makers, paving the way for a more inclusive and effective healthcare system.
